A courtyard house that reorganizes around a single fig tree

( flagship — meridian house )

Commissioned by a family of five on a narrow infill site in Lisbon, Meridian House folds four volumes around a preserved fig tree, using cross-ventilated cork-lined walls to cut mechanical cooling to near zero. Completed 2025 with Estúdio Bragança.

( design process )

Site & brief

Weeks spent walking the site before a line is drawn — orientation, ground conditions, neighbours, and a client brief stress-tested against what the plot can actually give.

2–4 weeks

Concept design

A small number of strong spatial ideas, tested in section as much as plan, presented as models rather than renders wherever a client is willing.

4–6 weeks

Design development & planning

Material, structure and services resolved together with engineers, then carried through planning submission with the same team that will see it built.

3–6 months

Construction & handover

Site supervision by the design architect, not a delegated junior — every detail on site is a detail we drew, and we stand behind it after the keys are handed over.

8–18 months
